Description
🏰 【 Winery Legend: Château Beychevelle 】

Château Beychevelle, situated in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, commands a prestige that far exceeds its ranking as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Often referred to as a "Super Second" in terms of quality and market demand, the estate's history dates back to the 17th century under the ownership of the Duke of Épernon, Grand Admiral of France. Legend holds that ships passing the estate on the Gironde River would lower their sails to salute the powerful Admiral. The command "Baisse-Voile" (lower the sail) evolved into the name Beychevelle, inspiring the iconic dragon ship emblem on the label. The 2016 vintage is historically significant as the inaugural vintage produced entirely in the spectacular new glass-walled winery designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc.

🌿 【 Terroir & Craftsmanship 】

Located near the Gironde estuary, the estate benefits from deep Garonne gravels which provide excellent drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon, while clay-limestone plots offer roundness to the Merlot. The 2016 vintage leveraged the new gravity-flow cellar, allowing for precise plot-by-plot vinification. Extraction was managed with extreme gentleness to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse. The wine was aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels (50-60% new), integrating structure with elegance.

📅 【 Vintage Report & Critical Acclaim 】

2016 is widely considered a legendary vintage for the Left Bank. A wet spring filled the water reserves, followed by a hot, extremely dry summer that induced beneficial water stress, thickening the skins and concentrating tannins. Relief came with rain in mid-September, followed by an Indian summer that allowed for a leisurely harvest of perfectly ripe grapes. The resulting wine is defined by its remarkable structure, density, and aging potential.

🏅 Score: 96 - Vinous (Neal Martin)
"The 2016 Beychevelle is a wine that I have loved from barrel... It is a very impressive Saint-Julien that will age with style."

🏅 Score: 95 - James Suckling
"A very polished and refined red with currant, berry and chocolate character. Full body, soft and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Extremely long and linear."

🍷 【 Tasting Notes 】

👃 Nose:
The nose opens with profound aromas of blackberries, crème de cassis, and blueberries, interwoven with floral notes of violet, cedar, graphite, and subtle hints of sweet spices and toasted oak.

👅 Palate:
On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured, yet remarkably elegant. The tannins are dense and fine-grained, creating a velvety texture. The core fruit is sweet and concentrated, balanced by fresh acidity.

✨ Finish:
The finish is exceptionally long and mineral-driven, lingering with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco, showcasing the quintessential balance of Saint-Julien.

🍽️ 【 Serving Guide 】

🌡️ Temperature: Serve between 16°C - 18°C.
⌛ Decanting: Decant for at least 2 to 3 hours to allow the structured tannins to soften and the bouquet to open fully.
⏳ Drinking Window: Approachable now with decanting, but best from 2025 to 2045+.
🍴 Food Pairing: Excellent with roasted rack of lamb, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck breast, or aged Comté cheese.

💬 【 Manager's Pick 】

⚡ 2016 is undeniably a legendary vintage for Bordeaux, and for Beychevelle, it marks a new era with their state-of-the-art winery. This upgrade has resulted in a massive leap in quality—the purity of fruit and the silkiness of the tannins are simply outstanding. It is powerful yet refined. While it will age for decades, a good 2-3 hour decant makes it incredibly enjoyable right now. If you want a prestigious Grand Cru Classé that outperforms its ranking, this 2016 is a definitive smart buy! ⚡
