Description
🏰 【 Winery Legend: Domaine Michel Gaunoux 】

In the village of Pommard, Burgundy, Domaine Michel Gaunoux stands as a bastion of tradition. Unlike many modern producers chasing the "drink now" style, the Gaunoux family (currently managed by Alexandre Gaunoux) acts as a guardian of time, refusing to compromise with modernization. While the estate's history spans centuries, its legendary status was cemented by Michel Gaunoux. He established a philosophy of "slow evolution," and even after his passing in 1984, his family has strictly adhered to this ultra-traditional vinification method. There is no flashy technology here, only absolute loyalty to the terroir. This domaine is also one of the few to hold significant back-vintages, believing that a great Pommard must undergo the baptism of time to reveal its true soul.

🌿 【 Terroir & Vinification 】

Les Grands Epenots is widely recognized as one of the top Premier Crus in Pommard, often cited alongside Les Rugiens as possessing Grand Cru potential. Located on the northern side of the village near Beaune, the soil is rich in reddish iron oxide and clay-limestone. This unique terroir imparts a grand structure and powerful tannins to the wine, without sacrificing elegance.

In terms of vinification, the Gaunoux family are staunch traditionalists. Stem inclusion is decided by vintage but often remains high to enhance structure. Fermentation is long, followed by extended élevage in oak barrels. The percentage of new oak is kept very low, usually under 20-30%, allowing the terroir, not the wood, to dominate. This creates wines that are reserved and austere in their youth but possess astonishing aging potential.

📅 【 Vintage Insight & Critics' Appraisal 】

2016 was a "resurrection" vintage for Burgundy. A severe frost in late April devastated the Pommard appellation, with some estates losing up to 70% of their crop. However, the grapes that survived reached optimal maturity during a perfect summer. Due to the tiny yields, 2016 Pommards exhibit incredible concentration and vibrant acidity. They are classically structured wines, highly sought after by collectors.

🏅 Score: 93-95 (Est. based on vintage/terroir performance)

Allen Meadows (Burghound) on the Domaine's style:
"If you enjoy old school burgundies that are built to age and are not especially friendly young, these are for you. They are wines that are constructed for the very long haul."

🍷 【 Tasting Notes 】

👃 Nose
Initially reticent upon opening. With aeration, it explodes with aromas of black cherry, cassis, and wild blueberry. Following the fruit are the hallmark Pommard notes of sous-bois (forest floor), leather, ferrous minerality, and hints of smoke and spices.

👅 Palate
The palate reveals a grand skeleton with grippy, firm tannins—a result of the concentration from the low yields of 2016. Full-bodied with bright acidity that balances the weight. The mid-palate shows deep dark fruit flavors and a meaty texture.

✨ Finish
The finish is exceptionally long, marked by a saline minerality and a licorice aftertaste, demonstrating immense aging potential and a serious, aristocratic character.

🍽️ 【 Serving Guide 】

🌡️ Temperature: Serve at 16-18°C.
⌛ Decanting: Highly recommended. If drinking young, decant for at least 2-3 hours to soften the tannins and release the bouquet.
⏳ Drinking Window: Approaching drinkability now, but peak performance is expected between 2026-2045.
🍴 Food Pairing: Perfect for rich red meat dishes such as slow-braised beef cheeks, roasted rack of lamb, game (venison, wild boar), or aged Comté cheese.

💬 【 Manager's Pick 】

⚡ For those in the know, Gaunoux wines are never meant to be rushed. The 2016 production in Pommard was frighteningly low, but the quality is exceptionally high—a classic "iron fist" style. This Grands Epenots performs at a Grand Cru level; the tannins are solid, and the structure is incredibly tight. If you're looking for a bottle to lay down for another decade to watch its value (and taste) evolve, this is a sure bet. Just remember, patience is key—give it a good decant! ⚡
