Description
🏰 【 Winery Legend: Domaine Sylvie Esmonin 】
Located in the Gevrey-Chambertin village of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is situated just adjacent to the legendary Clos Saint-Jacques. Proprietor Sylvie Esmonin, a female winemaker with a profound background in agronomy, took the reins from her father Michel Esmonin. With a deep understanding of the vines and a bold, innovative spirit, she elevated the estate to new heights. Inspired by Dominique Laurent, she became a pioneer in the village for her extensive use of whole-cluster fermentation. This 2021 Vieilles Vignes (Old Vines) village-level red is the signature masterpiece of the domaine, perfectly showcasing Sylvie's hallmark philosophy of crafting wines with both immense power and profound depth.
🌿 【 Terroir Soul and Winemaking Craft 】
The grapes for this old vine cuvée are sourced from several prime parcels within Gevrey-Chambertin, boasting vine ages of 60 to over 70 years. These deep-rooted old vines thrive in clay-limestone terroir, extracting deep minerals that impart extraordinary concentration and complexity to the Pinot Noir. In viticulture, Sylvie favors a later harvest to ensure the optimal physiological ripeness of both the stems and the berries. The Élevage (winemaking) is where the soul of the wine lies: she employs a very high percentage of whole-cluster fermentation (sometimes up to 100% depending on the vintage) and matures the wine in French oak barrels, typically with 30% to 50% new oak. This meticulous craft endows the red wine with captivating spicy aromas and a massive backbone, while preserving the muscular traits quintessential to Gevrey-Chambertin.
📅 【 Vintage Analysis and Authority Scores 】
For Burgundy, 2021 was a challenging "winemaker's vintage." Severe April frosts and a wet summer led to drastically reduced yields. However, for the surviving grapes, it marked a return to Burgundy's classic and traditional profile. In contrast to the rich, opulent nature of the preceding solar vintages, the 2021 Pinot Noirs are celebrated for their bright acidity, fresh red fruit aromas, and lower alcohol levels. Sylvie Esmonin's typically rich and decadent style found a brilliant counterbalance in the cool climate of 2021, resulting in unprecedented elegance and finesse. The spicy nuances from the whole clusters and the vibrant acidity have achieved a perfect harmony.
🏅 Score: Burghound 89-91 / "The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is very clearly a Gevrey with its earthy and gamey dark berry fruit profile. There is very good volume and richness to the old vine-inflected flavors that deliver excellent length."
🍷 【 Tasting Experience 】
👃 Aroma: Uncorking immediately releases the signature rose petal and spice aromatics typical of whole-cluster fermentation. This is soon followed by notes of black cherry, red plum, game, and the classic damp earth and forest floor (sous-bois) fragrances synonymous with Gevrey.
👅 Palate: Medium to full-bodied. The old vines provide a solid density of fruit, while the crisp acidity inherent to the 2021 vintage makes the wine feel energetic and lively rather than heavy on the palate. The tannins are abundant and chewy, displaying excellent structural tension.
✨ Finish: The finish is clean and precise, leaving a long trail of dark fruit, a subtle touch of white pepper spice, and a mesmerizing mineral essence that lingers beautifully.
🍽️ 【 Tasting Guide 】
🌡️ Temperature: Best served between 15°C and 17°C.
⌛ Decanting: Given its youth and the high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation, it is highly recommended to decant for 45 to 60 minutes, or let it breathe in the bottle for 1.5 hours, to allow its tight tannins and complex aromatics to fully unravel.
⏳ Drinkability: Currently in its youthful phase. It is recommended to start approaching it from 2026 onwards, possessing excellent aging potential for 10 to 15 years.
🍴 Food Pairing: An exceptional match for roasted rack of lamb, Bœuf Bourguignon, pan-seared duck breast, or red meat dishes served with a black truffle reduction.
